Concept: From the Mud
The lotus flower grows deep in the mud, far away from the warmth of the sun. Most plant life could not survive such harsh conditions but eventually the lotus blooms and becomes the most beautiful flower ever surpassing all the others who grew in the sun. The lotus perfectly depicts the human condition of rebirth and self-regeneration, showing us that even when facing adversity or hardships, we are the ultimate masters of our fate and beauty comes from within ourselves.
Connection between
The inspiration behind these earrings for the Design Twin Cities exhibition comes from Hong Kong Wetland Park which is a peaceful and harmonic environment which highly contrasts with the busy and intense urban energy of Hong Kong and Shen Zhen.
Coexisting Relationship
My concept was to use the natural elements of the Wetland to express the coexisting relationship of Hong Kong and Shen Zhen. At the time, I choose the lotus pond as my starting point as a metaphor of the connection of the cities, which means individual lotuses growing and sharing joy and rough moments together in the same pond. Everything is connected, sometimes we just must search harder for the connection.
Wetland
I used white pearls to go on the bottom of the earring to reflect the idea of growing through mud from a seed as white color usually represents purity and rebirth. The lamp-shape petals and its long wire structure of a falling lotus are potential elements to design elegant rose gold earrings when I was drawing them in the Wetland. Furthermore, I chose to use rose gold to express its color tone and the changing season of autumn.
