Clockwork

The design process of this ring was a very intimate experience. The client wanted me to custom design a ring for her that she could always wear to remind herself of her past heartbreak and relationship struggles. Coming from a vicious cycle of unhealthy and abusive relationships that brought nothing but disappointment and pain, she wanted a way to break free. Love is never easy and more often than not, it’s ourselves we are lying to when it comes to relationships and making things work. We want to be loved so bad that we often overlook the toxic qualities in others and believe we will be the ones to change them, when they will never change. They are already molded in clay and forged by fire. When you try to change people, they break or break you, more often than not, the latter happens, slowly chipping pieces away from our sense of sense and identity and we become lost and all the love we have in our hearts, lost to someone who didn’t deserve it. We should have been giving ourselves the same amount of love we gave to others.

In order to understand her feelings as a designer, I asked her to send me a song that could express all of her emotions, so she sent me a the song, “心淡” by Hong Kong artist Joey Yung. I listened to the song and tried to understand her story and feelings and noticed the theme of time kept repeating in the lyrics.

The idea of the ‘Lock and Clock’ came naturally. The rotation and numeric designs of lock and clock were infused into a ring that is interactive to the wearer, making it a more personal and meaningful experience. Encased with twelve diamonds on the side and Roman numerals in between the two inlay rings that can spin around in the middle of the body ring. I replaced the number twelve with two diamonds that were set in different inlay ringsThe roman numerals are distorted and are not readable when the two diamonds are not aligned together., The pattern only makes sense when the two diamonds align together, showing that timing is everything. The diamonds also are symbolic of the present and future, expectations and goals. Although, nothing seems to make any sense in the present moment, and it feels like nothing will ever get better, this ring is telling us a story of how suffering is necessary for us to awaken and open our eyes. With pain, comes clarity and we must remind ourselves that although the future is unpredictable, we are in control of our lives and our feelings and who we entrust them to.
